I’m the Guava, scientifically known as Psidium guajava, and I’m cherished for my delicious, aromatic fruit that offers a sweet, tropical flavor. Native to Central America and the Caribbean, I was introduced to Hawaii in the early 19th century, where I quickly became a popular fruit tree. These days, my fruit is commonly used in traditional dishes, jams, and beverages, embodying the essence of the islands. Islanders often mix my juice with equal parts of orange and lilikoi juice, making for a refreshing beverage known locally as “POG” (Passion, Orange, Guava).
As I mature, I can grow into a small tree or large shrub, typically reaching heights of 10 to 30 feet, depending on the variety and growing conditions. My leaves are glossy and dark green, growing up to 4 inches long, and I produce lovely, fragrant white flowers that bloom throughout the year. Once pollinated, I bear round, yellow fruits that are filled with sweet, juicy pulp and tiny edible seeds.
Many people think I require a tropical climate to thrive, but I can adapt to various environments, including indoor spaces, with the right care. I prefer well-draining soil and should be watered moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Additionally, while I enjoy full sun, I can adapt to partial shade, making me versatile in different light conditions.
After you plant my seeds, you can expect to see germination within 2 to 4 weeks, and I typically start producing fruit within 2 to 4 years. For optimal results, place me in a bright location with plenty of sunlight, such as near a south-facing window or in a well-lit room that mimics my natural tropical habitat.
