I’m the Plumeria, and I’m best known for my fragrant, beautiful flowers that are often associated with tropical paradise. Native to the Caribbean and Central America, I was introduced to Hawaii in the early 19th century, where I quickly became an iconic symbol of the islands. In Hawaiian culture, I am known as “frangipani” and hold significant meaning, often used in leis and traditional ceremonies to symbolize love, beauty, and new beginnings.
As I mature, I can grow into a small tree or large shrub, typically reaching heights of 5 to 15 feet, depending on the variety and growing conditions. My leaves are long and narrow, growing in clusters at the end of my branches, and my most captivating feature is my stunning flowers, which can come in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, pink, and red. My blooms are not only beautiful but also emit a sweet, intoxicating fragrance that fills the air, making me a favorite among gardeners and flower enthusiasts alike.
Many people think I require constant humidity and high maintenance, but I am relatively easy to grow with the right care. Some believe I need to be watered daily, but I actually prefer to dry out between waterings, especially during the winter months when I go dormant.
