Aloha!

I’m Pua Kenikeni, scientifically known as Fagraea berteriana, and I’m cherished for my exquisite fragrance and beautiful flowers. Although I am not native to Hawaii, I was introduced in the late 1800s and quickly became a beloved part of the islands’ flora. My name, which means "ten-cent flower," comes from the time when my blooms were so highly prized that they sold for ten cents each! In Hawaiian culture, I symbolize love and affection, often used in leis and special occasions, embodying the spirit of aloha.

As I mature, I can grow into a small tree or large shrub, typically reaching heights of 10 to 30 feet. My glossy, dark green leaves are lance-shaped and can grow quite large, creating a lush canopy. My most captivating feature is my clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom and gradually turn to a soft light orange. These flowers are not only stunning but also emit a sweet, captivating fragrance that fills the air, making me a favorite among gardeners and flower enthusiasts.

There are some common misconceptions about me that I’d like to clarify. Many people think I require constant humidity and tropical conditions, but I can adapt well to indoor environments if given the right care. Some believe I need to be watered daily, but I actually prefer to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Additionally, while I thrive in fertile soil, I can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they are well-draining.

After you plant me, you can typically expect to see healthy growth within a few weeks. While it may take about 1 to 2 years for me to produce my first blooms, the anticipation is well worth it! For optimal results, place me in a bright location with filtered sunlight, such as near a window with sheer curtains, to mimic my natural habitat.

Rest assured, I can thrive indoors during harsher weather and outdoors when conditions are nice. With the right care, I’ll bring a touch of tropical elegance and fragrance into your home.
